R.I.P. Jeff Hanneman Died at 49 Years Old From Liver Failure

Jeff Hanneman

January 31, 1964 to May 2, 2013

Jeff was my favorite of the two guitar players in Slayer. Kerry King always had the higher profile in the metal scene, but Jeff’s playing was much more varied and creative than Kerry’s. That’s just my humble opinion. But look at the writing credits and tell me I’m wrong.

Jeff was also the one who really brought the early 80′s hardcore-punk influence the the Slayer sound too…and that is what made early Slayer so special to me personally.

I am really glad I got to see them three times if I am not mistaken. The “South of Heaven” tour in L.A. The “Seasons in the Abyss” tour, also in L.A. And again in Anchorage, Alaska…sometime in the 90′s.

First, the horrible spider bite he got.

And now liver failure.

Top 11 Greatest Slayer Cuts

1.) Angel of Death (Reign in Blood LP, 1986)
2.) Hell Awaits (Hell Awaits LP, 1985) (the intro to this song f*ckin’ kills!)
3.) Praise of Death (Hell Awaits LP, 1985)
4.) At Dawn They Sleep (Hell Awaits LP, 1985)
5.) Kill Again (Hell Awaits LP, 1985)
6.) Raining Blood (Reign in Blood LP, 1986)

9.) Dead Skin Mask (Seasons in the Abyss LP, 1990)
10.) Tormentor (Show No Mercy LP, 1983)
11.) Necrophiliac (Hell Awaits LP, 1985)

I got to see Slayer, in Los Angeles, on both the “South of Heaven”, and “Seasons in the Abyss” tours. I’ve also seen them a couple of more times after that. Always really good. I actually started listening to them in 1984, after the release of “Show No Mercy” (1983) and before the release of “Haunting the Chapel” (1984). I don’t listen to much thrash metal anymore, but this stuff is in my DNA, and subconscious, forever.

The New Metallica EP Is As Good As Anything On Death Magnetic

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

The new Metallica 4-song EP, “Beyond Magnetic”, is really good. As good as, if not better than, anything on their last full-length album, “Death Magnetic” (which was also a very good record). Some people have been saying it’s a form of, “damage control”, for the bad reception of, “Lulu”, amongst most Metallica fans. I think those people are idiots anyway. “Lulu”, is great album. It is just not a traditional, “Metallica”, “heavy metal”, or “thrash metal”, album. It is an avant-garde, experimental rock album. And a great one at that. But I also LOVE this new, more traditional sounding, Metallica EP.

1.) Hate Train (a very good song, solid, and cool sounding all the way through)

2.) Just a Bullet Away (the intro/beginning of this song is just awesome, cool rhythm guitar playing too)

3.) Hell and Back (yet another good Metallica song)

4.) Rebel of Babylon (my favorite song on this EP, some really incredible rhythm guitar playing again)

Disc Number 2 of the Mighty “Lulu” is Just As Good As the First!

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

This is a f*cking awesome record. Metallica sounds so good. Damn this is good. I haven’t liked a Metallica record this much since, “Justice”…or maybe even, “Masters”? Lou sounds really cool too. It’s so much better than what I have been reading.

So much better.

This is really cool.

I am going to be listening to this one…a lot.

“Lulu”, sounds like Metallica and the Velvet Underground formed a Saccharine Trust tribute band in Black Sabbath’s rehearsal space.

Which sounds really cool to me.

Lulu is Incredible

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

I am listening to, “Lulu”, the Lou Reed/Metallica album, right now for the first time. I am on the fourth song, and so far the ride has been incredible. Metallica sounds at their most ripping, and creative, since, “Master of Puppets”. I hear, “Masters”-era Metallica, Black Sabbath, stoner rock/doom metal, Earth, free-jazz, heavy-alternative like: Saccharine Trust, Butthole Surfers, Swans, and later Black Flag. I also hear the Velvet Underground, and Lou Reed solo sounds. I am loving this. It is really, really good. I really liked, “Death Magnetic”, but just like the band themselves, and Lou Reed, said…this is one of the best things either of them has ever done.

With all the horrible reviews of, “Lulu”, out there, some of you think I am being sarcastic in my glowing review of, “Lulu”…but I’m not. It is an awesome album. A great piece of art.

And I’m only on track 6 (of 10 total).

Great record.

People have really shitty taste.

F*ck ‘em all!

…”Kill ‘em All!”

“Lulu”, is a really exciting record.

I don’t even know which songs to post yet off of youtube, because they are all awesome…I REALLY LIKE THIS ALBUM.

I can’t believe how many bad reviews of the this album are out there. People are f*ckin’ idiots! This is a really cool sounding record. Still on track 6. Still really digging it.

I am LOVING this at my first listen, but I feel that for some it may sound better if they really listen to it a few times. It will fly over the head of the average musical idiot.

Oh yeah, what the fuck is a, “Danko Jones”? (see blabbermouth.net news story about something, or someone, called, “Danko Jones”, not liking, “Lulu”? Who would judge their metal, or any music for that matter, by what someone called, “Danko Jones”, thinks?…I don’t know if, “Danko”, is even a musician? I DO know there is nothing metal about someone named, “Danko Jones”. So who is he to judge Metallica and Lou Reed?)

I am going to stop writing, and listen to the rest with complete focus.

LULU IS BEAUTIFUL.

Thank-you to: Lou Reed, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo. F*ck the naysayers, you made a great album.

Lulu is incredible.

Metallica Rules the Universe!

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

As of the year 2009, Metallica’s, “Black Album”, became the best-selling CD of the SoundScan-era. To date, the black album has sold 15,689,000 copies. That’s the more than the Beatles, Elvis, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson, the Eagles, Pink Floyd, Guns-n-Roses, Nirvana, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain…you get the point.

As a old-school Metallica fan since, “Kill ‘em All”, it’s pretty cool to read that. Think about it. A Thrash Metal/Heavy Metal band out sold EVERYONE.

Heavy Metal now rules the universe (well, as of 2009 anyway)! Thanks to the biggest of “the big four” of American Thrash Metal.
